“If you want to lose weight, you need to increase your weight.” This fitness tip may sound absurd, but when it comes from celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar, you are inclined to believe it.
Diwekar, while delivering a lecture on 'Future Proof Your Health' at Ahmedabad Management Association in Ahmedabad on Saturday, spoke about the mistakes people make while going on a diet and said it is important to develop healthy bones and increase muscle weight if one is looking to lose weight and stay fit.
“What do you need to increase? Bone and muscle weight,” she told a predominantly Gujarati speaking audience in a jam-packed auditorium.
Urging the audience increase bone density and muscle weight, she said if this is done, fat lose would happen automatically. “You won't look slim, but you would feel light,” she remarked. She also spoke about the entrepreneurial nature of Gujaratis and their ability to take risks.
Diwekar, who authored the book 'Notes for Healthy Kids', said when the density of bone and muscle weakens, it leads to insulin resistance. Weakened bones and muscle mass is one of the main reasons of insulin resistance, she added.
She suggested that instead of thinking about the calories consumed, people should focus on foods that have reflections in art, medicine and kitchen. She further said instead of looking for the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats on packaged foods, people should eat food that is locally grown, traditional and seasonal.
Diwekar said one should have food that has “Gujarati” name rather than having western food.
Exercising for 150 minutes per week, remaining active every day and following a food habit that is sustainable were other suggestions given by her.
