Ramayana arrived in theatres on Thursday and has received largely positive reactions. Moviegoers were impressed by the visual spectacle and performances offered by the Hindu mythological epic directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

Ramayana, the first instalment of a two-part cinematic adaptation of the epic, features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, amongst others. On the opening day, it was screened across 11,621 shows domestically, reports showed.

In 2023, the Prabhas-starrer Adipurush had become the latest cinematic adaptation of the ancient epic. However, the Telugu-Hindi flick was largely criticised for being a poor attempt despite the presence of the likes of Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Trupti Toradmal, and others. Now that another Ramayana movie has hit theatres, comparisons have started pouring in.

According to available information, while Ramayana collected ₹64.85 crore net and ₹77.50 crore gross on opening day, Adipurush earned ₹86.75 crore net and ₹103.08 crore gross. Ramayana earned more in Hindi with ₹47.50 crore net compared to Adipurush's ₹37.25 crore net. However, in Telugu, Adipurush recorded a higher net collection of ₹48.00 crore compared to Ramayana's ₹6.00 crore net.

Box office data tracking website Sacnilk said that Ramayana has crossed the ₹100 crore worldwide milestone on its opening day, registering ₹127.50 crore gross, comprising ₹77.50 crore from India and an estimated ₹50 crore from overseas markets. "North America has emerged as a major contributor, with Venky Box Office reporting approximately $2 million from premieres and another $1.5 million from Thursday's business. The strong global start provides a promising foundation ahead of the Diwali weekend, when sustained audience demand will determine the film's box office momentum," Sacnilk said in a report.

Adipurush grossed ₹393.00 crore worldwide (₹343.00 crore in India and ₹50.00 crore overseas), with a total India net collection of ₹288.15 crore led by ₹147.92 crore in Hindi and ₹133.28 crore in Telugu (alongside ₹3.57 crore in Tamil, ₹2.11 crore in Kannada, and ₹1.27 crore in Malayalam).

Adipurush, which was released across the country in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil on June 16, stars Prabhas as Raghav (Ram), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita), and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh (Raavan). In the opening weekend, the film, reportedly made on a budget of ₹500 crore, raced to ₹340 crore in just three days—₹140 crore on day one, followed by ₹100 crore each on day two and three. But the film's box office score witnessed a drastic slide as negative word of mouth spread on social media.
