What Is 'Dept. Q' Season 2 about?
The second season will adapt Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s second novel in the 'Department Q' series, published as "The Absent One" in the United States and "Disgrace" in the United Kingdom. The story follows Detective Chief Inspector Carl Mørck and his team as they reopen a disturbing murder case from around 20 years earlier.
The case involves the brutal killings of a teenage brother and sister at a summer cottage. At the time, a young scholarship student from an exclusive boarding school confessed to the murders and was sent to prison. The case was considered closed, but Carl begins to suspect that the confession was false and that someone wanted to protect a wealthy, influential group.
As the investigation continues, Carl and his team discover that several members of the privileged circle have grown into powerful figures in Scottish society. Their wealth and connections may have helped them escape justice for years. The investigation soon becomes dangerous, as the suspects try to stop Carl from uncovering the truth. The story explores privilege, corruption, violence and the ways powerful people can use their influence to avoid punishment. One of the most important characters in Season 2 is Kimmie Lassen, played by Aisling Franciosi, who has a dark connection to the group of wealthy individuals under investigation.
Which cast members are returning?
Matthew Goode returns as Carl Mørck, the troubled detective leading Department Q. Alexej Manvelov returns as Akram, Leah Byrne is back as Rose, and Jamie Sives will reappear as Hardy. However, Kelly Macdonald, who played Dr Rachel Irving, will not return for the second season because of scheduling conflicts.
The new season will also introduce several actors and characters. Greg Wise joins as Derek Powell. Nicholas Rowe will appear as Thomas Fulton, Tony Curran will play Winnie Calderwood, and Amy Brenneman will essay Helen. Their characters will help expand the story and bring new conflicts into Carl’s investigation.
Season 2 is also expected to develop the wider story surrounding Hardy, whose life changed after he was shot and left paralysed. While the original novel focuses heavily on Carl and his investigative team, the television adaptation will give Hardy a more active role. He is expected to investigate possible corruption within the police force, adding another mystery alongside the murder case. This storyline could reveal problems within the very institution responsible for delivering justice.
When will 'Dept. Q' Season 2 release?
For now, Netflix has not confirmed a premiere date. With filming expected to continue until December 2026, a release in mid-to-late 2027 appears to be the most likely possibility. Until Netflix shares an official release date, fans will have to wait for further updates on Carl Mørck’s next investigation.
