Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar on Wednesday announced that his celebrity chat show, “Koffee with Karan”, is concluding after 22 years. The show will run its ninth and final season on JioHotstar from October 14.

In a conversation with Variety, Karan said the show was rewarding, but he realised that he wants to spend the next decade of his life directing more movies.

In an emotionally charged promo video for the final season, the Karan looked back at the show’s journey. The director recalls a conversation with his late father, Yash Johar, who scoffed at his idea, saying, “Karan, you’ll call your friends and talk with them. You do that every day. Who will pay you for that?”

The first episode of the show launched soon after that, with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as its guests. The first season also had other famous pairings, including Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali were another pair that starred in the first season.

The show has since aired eight seasons and 161 episodes. It was widely known for featuring Nepo-stars and has sparked several controversies in the past.

Karan addressed these incidents indirectly and even mentioned the “nepotism” tag that he carries, hinting at a past dig involving Kangana Ranaut. He even talked about how he created controversies between lovers who have parted ways, possibly referring to an episode where Deepika Padukone asked Ranbir Kapoor to endorse a condom brand.

In Season 6, Karan invited Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. c as guests. The conversation went south after Pandya discussed his dating life, leading to both the cricketers getting briefly suspended from all BCCI-related activity.

In 2022, Karan had suggested the show was over, but it was later revealed that it was only leaving television and would move to Disney+Hotstar as a streaming exclusive.

In a press note shared by Karan and reported by HT, he said,“There are some journeys you don't plan to end; you simply know, somewhere deep within you, when it is time to let them go. Koffee With Karan has been an extraordinary part of my life. It has given me friendships, memories, moments of complete madness, a lot of love and, yes, its fair share of controversy! But through all of it, what has remained constant is the audience.”

The box-office hits Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani are some films directed by Karan.
