After years of delays and stalled attempts, the much-anticipated Madhubala biopic is finally set to start rolling. The yet-untitled film, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Sara Arjun as the legendary actor, is expected to begin shooting in September.
According to an industry source cited by Mid-Day, the film is expected to go on floors in September at Royal Palms in Goregaon, where the director has been shooting the final song of "Love & War", which is expected to wrap next week. Once the song is completed, the filmmaker is expected to wrap up the production and retain the sets for the Madhubala biopic.
Sara Arjun to play the legendary actor
Sara Arjun, best known for her role in “Dhurandhar”, will portray Madhubala in the film. The project will be directed by Jasmeet K Reen, who previously helmed the 2022 Alia Bhatt-starrer “Darlings”, while Bhansali will produce it.
The film is currently in pre-production and is expected to go on floors later this year. Set against the golden era of Hindi cinema, it is being positioned as an ambitious cinematic project around one of Bollywood's most enduring icons.
Madhubala remains one of the most iconic figures in Hindi cinema, known for her screen presence and enduring popularity across generations. Madhubala was among India's highest-paid stars in the 1950s. Over a career spanning two decades, she appeared in more than 70 films, moving effortlessly between genres, from light-hearted comedies to grand historical dramas. Decades after her death, she remains celebrated for her beauty and unconventional screen presence. The film is said to explore both Madhubala’s rise to fame and the personal struggles behind her public image.
‘Love & War’ nears completion
The Madhubala biopic will follow Bhansali’s “Love & War”, which is now nearing the end of its production. The film marks Bhansali’s reunion with Ranbir Kapoor after “Saawariya” and with Alia Bhatt after “Gangubai Kathiawadi”. It also marks his first collaboration with Vicky Kaushal as a lead actor.
