A "Prison Break" reboot has been in active development for some time at the Hulu network. A soft reboot developed by Elgin James ("Mayans M.C."), it's set within the same universe as the original Fox series. It features a completely fresh story and new characters, meaning the central characters Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) will not return.
The casting process is already underway, with lead characters already cast and more being added. The latest update is that Trammell ("True Blood"), Kerry Bishé ("Halt and Catch Fire"), Robin Weigert ("Deadwood"), Chris Coy ("The Deuce", "Black Rabbit"), Sean Bridgers ("Deadwood"), and Jean Louisa Kelly ("Uncle Buck") have been added to the cast.
The aforementioned names join lead cast members Emily Browning, Lukas Gage, and Margot Martindale.
Per the official logline, the reboot follows a soldier-turned-corrections officer who takes a high-stakes job at one of America's deadliest prisons to aid someone she loves. According to cast members, the reboot delivers a significantly darker, more intense, and more serious thriller take than the original series. Following an official series order from Hulu, the pilot was filmed in 2025, and main series production kicked off in mid-2026. The show's creative team is reportedly building a three-season outline.
The reboot is led by a singular creative voice working alongside the franchise's original masterminds. Elgin James, who also worked on "The Outlaws", is the primary creative force steering the ship. He serves as the official showrunner, head writer, and executive producer. He also directed the pilot episode.
Paul Scheuring, the original creator of the 2005 "Prison Break" series, returns as an executive producer to oversee the continuation of the universe he built. Additionally, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz—all of whom executive produced the original Fox run—are back as executive producers to preserve the franchise's signature high-stakes mood.
