Sony Pictures unveiled the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, reuniting franchise favourites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan for what is being billed as the final chapter of the blockbuster adventure-comedy series. The film, directed by Jake Kasdan, is set to release in theatres on December 25, 2026.
The trailer picks up from the cliffhanger ending of Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), but this time flips the franchise's central premise on its head. Instead of players being sucked into the magical video game, Jumanji itself escapes into the real world, unleashing its dangerous creatures, bizarre landscapes and unpredictable challenges on ordinary life.
Johnson returns as Dr Smoulder Bravestone, alongside Hart as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Black as Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon and Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse. Nick Jonas and Awkwafina also reprise their roles, while the younger cast, including Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Madison Iseman and Ser'Darius Blain, return to confront the game’s greatest threat yet. The trailer teases a fresh twist, with the familiar avatars becoming trapped in “demo mode” before the players are forced back into the game to restore order.
Packed with the franchise’s trademark blend of action, fantasy and comedy, the footage features towering monsters, high-speed chases, collapsing cities and humourous banter between the returning ensemble. Sony has promoted the film with the tagline, “One. Last. Game. The final countdown begins,” signalling that Jumanji: Open World is intended to conclude the modern Jumanji trilogy that began with the hugely successful Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017.
The film is also shaping up to be one of the biggest holiday releases of the year. Opening on Christmas Day, Jumanji: Open World is expected to face stiff international competition, including a high-profile box-office clash in India with Shah Rukh Khan's much-anticipated action thriller King.
