John Luther returns: When to expect Idris Elba's new 'Luther' sequel?

Interestingly, Luther returns alongside a familiar, integral character from the series. Ruth Wilson will reprise her character, the complex psychopath Alice Morgan. Morgan was noticeably absent from the 2023 standalone film "Luther: The Fallen Sun", but series creator Neil Cross has reportedly penned a new story that brings her character back.
Another returning character is Martin Schenk, played by Dermot Crowley. The new additions include Stephen Dillane ("The Outrun"), Anya Chalotra ("The Witcher"), Kyle Soller ("Andor"), Ian Hart ("The Mosquito Coast"), and Niamh Algar ("Raised by Wolves").
Cross wrote the script, while Jamie Payne returns to direct. As per the official logline from Netflix, the yet-untitled movie revolves around a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders on the streets of London. Luther is secretly called back into service, but is also a walking target. He must navigate the investigation while trapped between the law and the underworld, where everyone on all sides wants him dead. The film is expected to be out sometime in 2027.
Elba's other projects comprise two of his acting projects, which he also directs: "Above the Below" (aiming for a December 2026 release), a survival thriller which has Elba handling double duties as both star and co-director; "This Is How It Goes", an Apple Original project which is an adaptation of Neil LaBute’s tense psychological play, produced under his banner 22Summers.
Elba is also sharing the screen with Viola Davis in "Children of Blood and Bone", a live-action adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's best-selling fantasy novel. It is expected to be released in January 2027.
