It has been 20 days since Imtiaz Ali's moving period drama opened in theatres. Unlike some of its big-scale contemporaries that took sharp drops after the first weekend, this Diljit Dosanjh-starrer has been doing not only steady daily numbers, but also notable upticks during the weekends. As it concludes its third week run, the film has managed to do impressive numbers both domestically and globally.
Sacnilk box office data shows the India gross has now surged to Rs 60.69 crore (net total: Rs 50.95 crore). Combined with the overseas gross (Rs 16.95 crore), the worldwide total is now eyeing the 80 crore mark. Currently, the cumulative global gross is Rs 77.64 crore.
This kind of performance is a rarity, the kind demonstrated previously by Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "12th Fail", which also did minimal numbers in the initial days (as low as around the Rs 1 crore range) and eventually netted Rs 50 crore in India. "Main Vaapas Aaunga" debuted with a very quiet Rs 1.15 crore on its opening day. However, there is a slight difference. The Vikrant Massey-starrer was made for a reported budget of Rs 20 crore, with a final reported worldwide collection coming close to 70 crore (estimated).
"Main Vaapas Aaunga", on the other hand, is said to have cost about 70 crore (reported) in production expenses. So it will need to remain in theatres and do steady business for a longer period to be considered a truly profitable venture. However, if the makers have already sold the non-theatrical rights for a decent sum, they should be in the safe zone.
Typically, Imtiaz Ali's films follow the standard industry pattern of peaking in the first weekend and steadily declining. However, "Main Vaapas Aaunga" shocked trade analysts by achieving a 72% collection increase in Week 2 compared to Week 1. Every single day of its second week out-grossed its opening Friday.
His earlier star-driven commercial hits like "Love Aaj Kal" and "Rockstar" opened to massive hype, pulling over Rs 6–Rs 11 crore on their opening days due to high anticipation. The filmmaker's other hits, like "Jab We Met", grew steadily via strong word-of-mouth. "Main Vaapas Aaunga", too, was also helped by largely positive social media chatter and, of course, offline discussions among those who were strongly moved by the storyline and performances. It goes without saying that this is a trend seldom seen before in modern multiplex eras.
