Arjun Sarja's instant blockbuster "Blast" has officially entered the list of top 5 earners in Tamil cinema of 2026. It now sits comfortably in the 5th position as of Day 18. The film, co-starring Preity Mukundhan, Abhirami, Arjun Chidambaram, John Kokken, and Vivek Prasanna, among others, has garnered Rs 67.69 crore in worldwide gross, as per data tracked by Sacnilk.
The film did excellent business on the third Sunday (Day 18), with a considerable surge from its third Saturday earnings. It collected Rs 2.65 on this day and Rs 2.26 from the previous day, from 2,038 shows. This took its net domestic earnings to Rs 46.65 crore and domestic gross to Rs 53.64 crore. It did an overseas business of Rs 14.05 crore.
"Blast" now eyes the lifetime gross of another mid-budget Tamil hit "Youth", which concluded its theatrical run with a cumulative global gross of Rs 71.73 crore. "Blast" is currently trailing "Karuppu", "Parasakthi", "Thaai Kizhavi" and "Youth" in terms of lifetime gross. While the "Karuppu" target seems unlikely, the possibility of it toppling the other three films is quite high, especially considering that "Parasakthi" made only Rs 85.10 crore globally.
It's also important to put "Blast" in a category of its own rather than measuring it against relatively bigger-scale efforts like "Karuppu" (this year's highest-grossing Tamil film). The former is said to have been made under Rs 20 crore, and has already touched the break-even point in terms of profit.
The film has maintained highly consistent momentum week after week. When stacked against other major mid-budget Tamil films of 2026, and when looking at the budget-to-profit ratio, "Blast" undoubtedly ranks as one of the most profitable projects of the year.
It has even outperformed Dhanush’s "Kara", Suriya's "Retro", and Pradeep Ranganathan’s "Dragon" in key markets. Unlike "Retro", which crashed in neighbouring states after a big opening weekend, "Blast" turned into a regional phenomenon. It is the second-highest-grossing Tamil film in Kerala, set to overtake "Karuppu" soon in the state. (A few reports claim it already has, while some say it will do so by the third Wednesday.)
The directorial debut of filmmaker Subash K. Raj, "Blast" is a family-driven action vehicle, with a multi-strand screenplay that pits four members of a karate-proficient family against a criminal syndicate, independent thugs, ruthless hitmen, and police officials who are forced to get involved after an illegal deal goes wrong.
