Nolan has built a unique personal brand in India and carries in the country a level of appeal that even Spielberg, despite being an even bigger legend, cannot claim. His name alone now carries superstar power, allowing original concepts like "The Odyssey" and "Oppenheimer" to flourish powerfully and outpace the big-scale, visual-effects blockbusters not just from Hollywood, but from Indian cinema as well. Besides, the rise of many IMAX, 4DX, and other premium large-format screens across major Indian metro cities over the last decade has helped Hollywood tentpoles to generate higher revenue than before.
In the domestic (American) box office, "The Odyssey" brought in a spectacular $124.5 million over its 3-day opening weekend. Following a record-breaking first Monday that pulled in an estimated $17.5 million, its running 4-day domestic cumulative total stands at around $141 million — a historic opening indeed! Internationally, too, it has easily shattered the previous record held by "Oppenheimer", which opened to $82.5 million domestically in 2023.
Combined with the North American total and the international opening weekend total of $139.6 million, it has collectively earned over $264.1 million globally, outperforming Nolan's previous record-holder "The Dark Knight Rises" ($249 million). Domestically, it ranks as the largest opening weekend for any live-action film in 2026 so far, trailing only animated hits like "Toy Story 5" ($159 million) and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" ($131 million).
