Box Office: 'Patriot' opens strong, becomes second-highest opening day Malayalam grosser after 'L2: Empuraan'

Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, "Patriot" marked the reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal after 18 years. The film also features Fahadh Faasil and Kunchacko Boban in lead performances, with Nayanthara in a cameo role

The Mammootty-Mohanlal spy thriller opened to a good start at the worldwide box office, earning roughly Rs 29.37 crore, marking the second-highest Day 1 opener globally after Mohanlal's "L2: Empuraan".

Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the film managed solid business across India, registering a domestic net collection of Rs 9.80 crore and a total gross of Rs 11.37 crore from 2,636 shows nationwide. In the overseas market, "Patriot" earned around Rs 18.00 crore, showed box office data from Sacnilk.

Kerala, the film's home turf, was obviously the primary driver, contributing Rs 8.50 crore to the domestic gross. Overall occupancy in India was approximately 66% to 73%, with afternoon and evening shows peaking at 75.75%.

"Patriot", which opened to generally mixed reviews, fared better in theatres worldwide than Mammootty's other recent outings, chiefly "Kalamkaval" (Rs 15.66 crore), "Bramayugam" (Rs 7.92 crore) and "Turbo" (roughly Rs 16 crore).

For Mohanlal, despite featuring in an extended cameo capacity, "Patriot" marks the actor's second-highest opener of the post-pandemic era after "L2: Empuraan", which is currently the record-holder with a Rs 68.20 crore opening. "Patriot" also surpassed the worldwide opening numbers of "Thudarum" (Rs 17.18 crore).

Interestingly, the pre-sales collection of "Patriot" alone (Rs 4.01 crore in Kerala) beat the total opening-day Kerala gross of "Malaikottai Vaaliban" (Rs 3.82 crore).

As per data collected from various sources, "Patriot" recorded an overall India occupancy of 66% to 73.44% on opening day (May 1). In India, Kerala leads as the state contributing the most revenue. Kochi is the leading major city with a massive 91.8% overall occupancy, followed by Kozhikode (85%), Mumbai (78%), among others.

Despite limited shows, Mumbai and Delhi (NCR) showed high interest, suggesting a strong appeal for the Mohanlal-Mammootty reunion outside South India.
