Like Paatal Lok, its creator's other acclaimed Netflix crime series Kohrra came out at a time when everyone was yearning for raw, gritty, and exceptional long-format crime stories, such as Sacred Games and similar web series belonging to the genre that relied on an uncompromising filmmaking approach tailored for mature audiences.
Since Sudip Sharma, who created Paatal Lok, is also one of the co-creators and co-writers of Kohrra with Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia, comparisons between the two shows are inevitable. In a recent interaction with PTI, the filmmaker explained that the intention of Kohrra is to focus on the "micro" (family), unlike Paatal Lok, which dealt with "macro" (society at large).
"It's a more personal show... I deliberately wanted to do that," added the filmmaker, who also co-directed the new season with Faisal Rahman, who previously assisted Paatal Lok and Three of Us director Avinash Arun. "It's really about relationships and about people rather than about the society at large, which is probably what Paatal Lok is... With the first season itself ('Kohrra'), all three of us wanted to tell a story about these two or three people in the police force and what is happening in their personal lives."
The second season, which sees Barun Sobti reprising his character from the first season, alongside new lead cast member Mona Singh (as the former's superior officer), deals with the case of a woman's death. "As you would finish, you would realise it starts with a dead body, but doesn't end with a dead body. And by that I mean, it doesn't end with just finding who the killer was," said Sharma.
When asked if there will be more seasons of Paatal Lok and Kohrra, he replies, "Honestly, I don't know. I prefer writing every season as a standalone thing. I'm happy that we made season two (of 'Kohrra'). I'm very happy with the way it has shaped up. If there isn't another season, I will not be disappointed. Let's just say. If we have to do another season, then that's a larger call. Then you have to ask yourself the question at that point in time -- 'Do I have more of these characters and more of this story still left in me?' And only if the answer is yes would I want to do another season because otherwise there's no point doing something just because it worked or because there's a lot of love for it."
Kohrra Season 2 begins streaming on Netflix on Feb. 11.
