Amid mixed reports from viewers, Sivakarthikeyan's latest release Parasakthi has taken a strong opening at the box office. The film went past the double-digit mark in Tamil Nadu, making it only the second Sivakarthikeyan film to achieve this after Amaran. The final opening day number of Parasakthi is approximately Rs 11 crore gross, whereas Amaran collected Rs 15.75 crore on its first day.
The advantage of releasing on Saturday is that the second day drop wouldn't be on show even if the reports aren't that encouraging. The Sunday factor kind of balances out the pre-Pongal factor which is huge in Tamil Nadu as the public generally stay away from theatres for the two to three days leading up to Pongal day.
Parasakthi had advance sales of approximately Rs 5.70 crore for the second day in Tamil Nadu. Only Amaran had better advance bookings for its second day, although the other Sivakarthikeyan films didn't have the Sunday advantage as Parasakthi has here. Morning shows had only 15 percent drop from the opening day but noon and afternoon shows are showing a better trend.
As per early estimates, Parasakthi should collect around Rs 8.5-9.5 crore on its second day. With a stronger push, there is an outside chance of touching double-digits too. Regardless, this is a strong hold for the film but the real picture will come on Monday as the third day figures will tell us whether the film has the chance of a long run or not.
Pongal season is definitely a boost for Parasakthi as it is the only major Kollywood film releasing for this festive season. However, there are two films coming up, Vaa Vaathiyar (January 14) and Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil (January 15), and while both films carry low trade buzz, we can never rule out the underdogs.
