HBO is developing a V for Vendetta series adaptation, with Peter Jackson on board to write.

According to a Variety report, sources informed that James Gunn (Superman, The Suicide Squad) and Peter Safran will serve as executive producers alongside Ben Stephenson and Leanne Klein. Gunn and Safran are the current heads of DC Studios.

However, the studios are yet to make an official confirmation.

Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, the classic graphic novel, released in 1982, previously got a live-action adaptation 20 years ago, starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman. The former portrayed the masked vigilante figure who takes on a totalitarian government ruling a futuristic Britain with the help of a young woman played by Portman.

Sporting a Guy Fawkes mask, the anarchist hunted corrupt and fascist figures while the secret police pursued him.

If done well, V for Vendetta could become another noteworthy addition to the HBO catalogue, following other acclaimed original DC adaptations, Watchmen and The Penguin, both multiple Emmy award winners.

Created by filmmaker Damon Lindelof, the HBO Watchmen was a sequel to the graphic novel created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Its principal cast included Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The Penguin, developed by Lauren LeFranc, was a spin-off of Matt Reeves' The Batman. It was headlined by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, delivering critically acclaimed performances.

HBO's upcoming DC show is Lanterns, headlined by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
