'Godzilla Minus One' sequel announced, titled 'Godzilla Minus Zero'

Oscar-winning director Takashi Yamazaki is returning to helm the new installment. This highly anticipated follow-up continues the legacy of the critically acclaimed 'Godzilla Minus One', which garnered an Oscar for its visual effects

A sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters has been announced. Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One will be followed by Godzilla Minus Zero. The makers made the announcement at the Godzilla Fest 2025 event, held in Tokyo to commemorate 70 years of the franchise.

Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the 2023 film, will return as director, writer, and visual effects supervisor. The logo, designed by Yamazaki himself, was presented at the event.

A darling of both audiences and critics, Godzilla Minus One also has the distinction of being the first Japanese production to win an Oscar for visual effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

Yamazaki, who comes from a strong background in digital and special effects, also served as the visual effects supervisor on Godzilla Minus One.

Hailing from the legendary Toho banner, Godzilla Minus One (2023) grossed $113 million in global box office receipts against a budget of $10-15 million. The original Godzilla, released in 1954, has now been deemed a classic. Though its effects may look cheesy when compared to today's entries in the kaiju universe, the work was groundbreaking for the time, and the film's storytelling prowess overshadows that of any sequels made since then.

The contemporary Hollywood reboots, released in 1998 and 2014, haven't been accepted as warmly by the audiences as the original. However, the latter hspawned the MonsterVerse, which features a crossover with King Kong from the reboot Kong: Skull Island. It was followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire recently.

A follow-up, titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is slated for release on March 26, 2027.
