The state of Assam has been plunged into a 3-day mourning period (September 20-22) after the sudden, tragic loss of singer Zubeen Garg at the age of 52.
Amid the sadness, food delivery and quick commerce platforms like Swiggy, Zomato and Blinkit moved the hearts of people across India after their gesture paying tribute to the late singer went viral.
On Sunday—a day where most people are likely to be home and order things online—the apps chose to be closed, as a mark of respect.
"Sorry! Restaurants aren't accepting orders at the moment. Please check back later," reads an error message on Swiggy (for users in Assam). While Blinkit displayed a "currently unavailable" message, the Zomato app showed an error message asking Assamese users to "check back in a while".
The multi-hyphenate lost his life after he was injured in a scuba diving accident. Although he was rescued from the sea, he could not be saved by doctors, and was declared dead on Friday afternoon.
Regarded as a cultural icon in Assam and West Bengal—as well as in Bollywood—Garg was much more than his famous pan-Indian song, 'Ya Ali', from the Bollywood film 'Gangster': he is an important part of Indian pop/rock music from the early 2000s, alongside singers like KK, Atif Aslam, Papon, Shaan, and more.

"A sea of humanity, united in according a farewell to their favourite son. He lived like a king, he is being sent to the heavens like one," Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X, alongside a photo showing crowds gathering in support of the beloved singer.
