Hollywood actor Michael Keaton's recent tribute to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk has attracted criticism on social media as the Birdman star pointed out the "irony" in Kirk's death.

Speaking at Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 50th anniversary gala, Keaton paid tribute to the slain activist, saying, although he disagreed with many things that Kirk said, "Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife, you gotta remember that."

Kirk was killed with a gunshot from a rooftop at the Utah Valley University campus, where he was speaking on Wednesday. Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Utah, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder and other felony offences.

The actor's remark that "shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable," did not go down well with a section of social media users who called him a "moron."

Michael Keaton is truly a moron when you hear him speak, wrote a user.

It's ironic that a dude that played Batman would say something so wrong and stupid about another man getting shot and killed for what he believed in, wrote another.

A user claimed that "It’s your left wing Hollywood crazies that contributed to his death."

"His ending remark was unnecessary.  He couldn't help himself from being insensitive," wrote another.
