Nearly three months after its theatrical release in India, Celine Song's critically acclaimed romantic drama Materialists will officially be available to subscribers of Netflix on September 13. The film is already available on other digital platforms like Prime Video on a rental basis.

The second film of Celine Song after her acclaimed directorial debut Past Lives, the film features Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans in an emotionally complex romantic situation while also navigating their share of professional struggles. Johnson plays a senior, high-performing executive at a dating firm.

In its review of the film THE WEEK wrote, "Celine Song's filmmaking approach, on first viewing, bears some of the notable qualities found in the best of Taiwanese and Japanese cinema. If you're a huge fan of the films of, say, Edward Yang and Yasujiro Ozu, you'll find Materialists sharing some commonalities. For instance, Materialists has scenes that recall Yang's 2000 film Yi Yi, which, like this film, begins at a wedding and features two characters who could've ended up with each other, reconnecting after ages."

The film came out worldwide in the same release window as in the United States. Made on a budget of $20 million, the film's worldwide gross totals to $75.3 million, a commendable sum for an original talking heads movie about characters in the age group of 30 and above. The film also stirred up enough discussions on social media, with polarising reactions from some corners.
