Hansal Mehta has shared an exciting update regarding his upcoming series. Gandhi, a biographical television series that will chronicle the life of Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi, will make its global debut at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival 2025.

Mehta took to social media to announce the news, and also shared a first-look photo of actor Pratik Gandhi as the main man himself. “Honoured. Humbled. Grateful,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), calling the project a “labour of love”. The show is also the first Indian series to be featured at TIFF in its nearly five-decade-long history.

The filmmaker wrote: “An audacious dream, born of belief and perseverance, now steps onto the world stage. Gandhi will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025 as part of its carefully curated PrimeTime slate. The first Indian series ever to be featured at TIFF. In its 50th year, this festival becomes the home for a story that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal. A moment of pride. A moment of memory. A quiet revolution begins.”

Mehta and Pratik first collaborated on Scam 1992, a television series reiterating the life of Harshad Mehta, a stockbroker-turned-fraudster. This will also be Pratik’s second time playing Gandhi, as he previously donned the role in Manoj Shah’s Gujarati play Mohan No Masalo.

The series is also extra special as Pratik’s wife, Bhamini Oza, will also play his on-screen wife, Kasturba. The film features an international cast with Tom Felton, Amar Upadhyay, Libby Mai, Harry Mckeown, and R. Badree playing crucial roles.

Gandhi, bankrolled by Applause Entertainment, will premiere at the TIFF’s Primetime slot. The film festival is scheduled to run from September 4 through September 14.
