Kerala police have registered a case against Malayalam actress Shwetha Menon after a complaint alleged that she made financial gains by acting in obscene scenes in films. This comes days before the elections to the office bearer posts at the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).

The complaint was filed by one Martin Menachery, who alleged that the obscene scenes from the movies were circulated on social media and porn websites, according to Manorama Online. Following this, the Ernakulam CJM court directed police to register a case. The charges include IT Act Section 67(A) and the Prevention of Immoral Activities Act, said the report.

Shwetha Menon has acted in some intimate scenes in films like 'Paleri Manikyam', 'Rathinirvedam' and 'Kalimannu' as well as a Kamasutra ad. The FIR alleged that she went nude in these films and ads with the alleged intention fo financial benefit and these scenes were circulated on social media and adult websites for profit.

Shwetha Menon won Femina Miss India Asia Pacific 1994, the same year Sushmita Sen became the first Indian to win Miss Universe and Aishwarya Rai won the Miss World title. She kicked off her acting career in Malayalam films in the early 1990s, before debuting in Hindi with Ishq in 1997. In the movie, Shwetha was the main dancer in the song, 'Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai' that featured Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn.

The timing of the complaint has raised eyebrows as Shwetha Menon is contesting for the post of the AMMA president while main contender Jagadeesh withdrew from the polls. The election to the posts of AMMA office bearers is scheduled to be held on August 15. Besides Shwetha Menon, actor Devan is also contesting for the president's post.

The latest development comes days after actor Baburaj was forced to withdraw from running for the post of AMMA general secretary as he was facing a sexual harassment case. Kukku Parameswaran and Raveendran are currently contesting for the general secretary post.
