Manorama News reported that Jagadish will formally withdraw his name from the stringent competition after holding discussions with Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi. An approval from all three will seal the deal. The actor had earlier explained that he did not discuss with colleagues before filing his nomination. “I decided to contest in my own capacity,” the senior actor told PTI. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is July 30, after which the clear picture of the contestants will emerge.
On Jagadish’s exit, it leaves Shwetha Menon, Anoop Chandran, Devan, Jayan Cherthala and Raveendran vying for the top post. If Menon wins, she will make history as the first woman president of the organisation in its thirty-year existence.
Jagadish’s decision has prompted praise from the Mollywood community, with producer Sandra Thomas calling the move “progressive”. “The approach of withdrawing from self candidacy and let women come to leadership should be emphasised and shines like a silver light in history [sic],” she wrote in a Facebook post.
