James Gunn teases 'Superman' and 'Peacemaker' connections, 'Superman 2' and 'Justice League' possibilities

James Gunn had on numerous occasions confirmed that he isn't following the route that previous 'Superman' films took, hinting at exciting directions his reboot and DCU will be taking in the near future

Superman-2025

The world of James Gunn's new Superman reboot, releasing on July 11, is one where ordinary mortals like us have been aware of the existence of superhuman beings for 300 years. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) has been aware of Superman's (David Corenswet) true identity for a while, as they are already dating when the movie begins.

"We're meeting them at a point where they've been together for about three months, which is the point in a relationship where you're like, 'Was this a really great fling or is this more serious, possibly forever?'" Brosnahan confirms, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

It makes sense because Gunn had previously confirmed that he isn't taking the route that previous Superman films took.

Hinting at his version of Superman and the superhero's reaction to the world around him, Gunn told EW that he intended to tell the story of "someone who was truly good in a world that doesn't value goodness, in a world that makes fun of basic kindness and basic human values," adding that "the fact that he can fly and lift buildings and shoot laser beams out of his eyes was really secondary to who he was as a person and what he stood for.”

Gunn also confirms that the Justice League is not part of this Superman film, but he is thinking about future possibilities with them. He also shared that a new Wonder Woman film is being written. (It is believed this upgrade will move ahead with a different lead cast member.)

Gunn added that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are four characters that are important to him, and he "feels great" about the development of two of them, but the other two are still being figured out.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director also teased the possibility of incorporating John Cena's Peacemaker (who returns in Season 2, also directed by Gunn, in August) into the world of his Superman. A post-credits scene has been confirmed, hinting at a sequel that, Gunn says, isn't necessarily a "straight-up Superman sequel."

Aside from Corenswet and Brosnahan, Superman features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener/ Green Lantern, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific and Anthony Carrigon as Rex Mason / Metamorpho.
