Crawling Angel Films, the independent film company that backed the acclaimed Girls Will Be Girls, is teaming up with True Story Films, the company of filmmaker Hansal Mehta and producer Sahil Saigal, to make a Hindi adaptation of the celebrated Sri Lankan comedy Tentigo, directed by Ilango Ram. The Hindi adaptation is also co-produced by Sanjay Gulati and Neeraj Pandey.
As per a Variety report, popular casting director Mukesh Chhabra is also making his debut as a producer with the project, alongside Tentigo producer Hiranya Perera, who is involved as an associate producer.
It was only last week the film's Tamil adaptation, titled Perusu, opened in Indian theatres. Tentigo was released on March 14 in Sri Lankan screens too. The Telugu remake is titled Pedha.
Starring Kaushalya Fernando, Priyantha Sirikumara, Thusitha Laknath and Ranjith Panagoda, Tentigo has the distinction of being the first Sri Lankan film to be remade into other languages such as Spanish, Italian, English, Hindi, Telugu, and Malayalam.
Reports say the Malayalam and Kannada-dubbed versions of Perusu have been completed. The Tamil version was produced by by Karthik Subbaraj's Stonebench Films.
Screenwriter Karan Vyas, noted for his work on Hansal Mehta's Scam 1992, Scam 2003, and Scoop, is working on the Hindi version. However, it's not yet known who will direct it.
Tentigo attracted international attention after its launch at the 2023 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, where it bagged the Special Jury Award.
In a statement, Sanjay Gulati said, “Over the last decade, many films I’ve been involved with have premiered at film festivals, but often remained out of the public eye. Tentigo, as a comedy, defies the typical ‘festival film’ label. Through this adaptation, I aim to break free from such definitions, as what truly matters is reaching a wide audience.”
