Sci-fi enthusiasts have reason to rejoice! Warner Bros India has announced that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar will head for an IMAX re-release across the country starting March 14. Both films will play in Indian theatres for a week, till March 20.
Interstellar re-release
Nolan’s 2014 space flick re-releasing in theatres comes as a surprise as the film commemorated its ten-year anniversary re-release in India in early February. Though the initial release was set for December 2024, the film experienced repeated delays due to Pushpa 2: The Rule dominating the screens late last year.
Interstellar’s re-release proved to be a massive success in the country as it grossed nearly Rs 20 crore in one week of screening, highlighting the appeal for Nolan’s films. During its initial release in 2014, the film amassed close to Rs 30 crore. Currently, the worldwide box office collection of the film stands at USD 759 million (Rs 662.3 crore).
Interstellar follows Cooper, a former NASA pilot, tasked with finding another planet as Earth has become uninhabitable. Along with other NASA scientists, Cooper risks never seeing his family again in hopes of securing a better future for them. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine.
Dune: Part 2 re-release
The re-release of Dune: Part 2 comes after the film bagged two Academy Awards at the Oscars earlier this month – Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. The film had its initial run in Indian theatres a year ago, solidifying its status as a successful sequel after the release of Villeneuve’s Dune in 2021.
During its original theatrical run in the country, the film minted Rs 34 crore. Worldwide, the sci-fi film grossed USD 714 million (Rs 623.1 crore).
Dune: Part 2 continues the story of Paul Atredies as he adapts to the Fremen life, mastering the desert and riding sandworms. Meanwhile, he seeks vengeance against the Emperor and House Harkonnen for destroying his royal household and killing his father, Leto. The film features a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem. The Dune series is based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 book of the same name.
Fun Fact: Besides both the films coming from the same genre, they also share a certain cast member – Chalamet. While the actor plays the lead role in the Dune series, Chalamet had a relatively small part in Interstellar, as McConaughey's on-screen son.
Hans Zimmer is also a common factor in flicks, the musical maestro having composed the soundtracks for Interstellar (being a long-time collaborator with Nolan) and the Dune series.
