Shapewear to boob tapes: Priyanka's gown and what goes 'inside' red carpet looks

Priyanka was widely trolled for her Grammys look

Priyanka Chopra dazzled on the Grammy's red carpet on Monday, in a plunging neckline gown from Ralph & Russo. With flared sleeves and sequin-crusted embellishments, the gown grabbed eyeballs, but what stole everyone's thunder was the neckline that extended down to he naval, exposing a naval stud.

Priyanka's fashion statement and criticism has started the never-ending debate on portrayal of women's bodies

While she was hailed for her bold fashion choices, what also followed was an avalanche of criticism and hate. Social media users wasted no time in trolling her for the look that did not suit her home country's 'sanskar', and even calling her vulgar. It does not stop there—many on social media have moved on to pointing out her 'sagging' breasts or belly fat in some of the photos from the event where she is seen comfortable seated. From suggesting she use boob tapes to ace the look to advising her to fire her stylist, the suggestions kept pouring in, interestingly from women too.

Priyanka herself has not responded to any of the trolls, but actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi took to Twitter to give it back to the haters. “I think the fact that Priyanka is not trying to hide her belly with her clutch is what makes this pic so beautiful. Makes her the rockstar she is. Her confidence an inspiration to every woman. Women have been so enslaven by men’s opinion of how women should look this photograph of Priyanka to me at the world’s most publicized event is the height of liberation. You go girl and keep rocking it. I was never a fan of the lady but this pic has surely made me one,” she wrote.

Was so upset to see this post on insta by Wendel Rodrigues who's work I otherwise have a modicum of respect for I think the fact that Priyanka is not trying to hide her belly with her clutch is what makes this pic so beautiful. Makes her the rockstar she is. Her confidence an inspiration to every woman Women have been so enslaven by men's opinion of how women should look this photograph of Priyanka to me at the world's most publicized event is the height of liberation. You go girl and keep rocking it. I was never a fan of the lady but this pic has surely made me one So dear men. We are not ur pre pubescent hipless perverted fantasy or your teenage gay boy flat chested contortion. We are real women, we have breasts, we have fat we have water retention and we rock and roll Because ...we are finally allowing ourselves as God intended us to be. Not how men fantasized us to be. We are flesh and blood and and glorious rolls of it. It gets even more beautiful when we have babies and the rolls grow - in direct adverse proportion to the dark areas in your primitive brain So dear ugly men get this. We are not our bodies We are our abilities. We are our talent. We are our own rock stars Would anybody have dared comment on a mans belly or appearance like this? God knows we see grotesque images of them everyday and all the time More power to you #PriyankaChopra. I'm going to flash my flabby baby stretch marks with confidence tomorow thanks to you. And may every girl and woman in the world grow your confidence too . Bless you ❤️

While Krishnamoorthi's post is directly addressed to men, what is interesting here is that a whole lot of hate comments have been pouring in from women themselves. This is proof that we need to go a long way in addressing body positivity and the notions of the perfect-bodied celebs.

Fashion faux pas?

Most of the users wonder why Priyanka did not go for boob tapes, and if the whole appearance was a fashion faux pas? Red carpet appearances can be insanely demanding with the pressure to show the right amount of skin and not get trolled for the boobs or thighs or even butts. So, what exactly do celebrities wear under those red carpet dresses to keep things in place? From silicone covers to adhesives to medical tape and nipple tapes, the list goes on and on. Stylists and celebs also swear by Spanx shapewear, and even butt pads! Pairing all of these with the right lingerie is another battle in itself. Despite all that goes in, nothing can sometimes prepare them for photo disasters that capture those tapes sticking out.

Saggy boobs movement

In August last year, women across the world started an Instagram movement #saggyboobsmatter to spread awareness and encourage women to embrace their normal body types and 'boob types'. It started with Chidera Eggerue, a style blogger from UK, sharing a post to encourage all fellow women to learn and appreciate their respective bodies and most importantly their breasts or 'saggy boobs'. The campaign went viral since then with women from around the world joining Chidera in sharing photos, posing confidently in fashionable clothes and using these popular hashtags.
