It is that time of the year again, where social media platforms are bombarded with videos and hashtags of yet another “challenge”. ‘Shell on challenge’ is the new “happening” thing. What is it all about?

The challenge requires you to eat food without removing its cover/packaging. This can range from egg shells to plastic wrapper. The deed is filmed and then posted on Snapchat.

A teen from Arizona took up the challenge biting through a plastic bag of carrots and this, later on, became viral on Snapchat. In another video posted by a radio station based in the US, a host is seen eating three types of food―lemon, banana, and candy―all “shelled”.

The challenge which sprang up in Snapchat last week has some teens going gaga over it. For now, the challenge is contained within the US, but the chances of reaching other parts of the world is high, thanks to social media.

Of course, as one can imagine, it is dangerous too! People are coming up against the challenge, asking parents to stop their children from participating in the challenge. Medical professionals warn against this challenge because this is a potential choking hazard.

Eating fruits without peeling their skin, though considered okay, can be problematic if the skin contains pesticide residues. On the other hand, consuming artificially packaged food with plastic and foil wrappers can prove fatal sometimes.

Interestingly, none of the video clips that have gone online show anyone completing the challenge. On the bright side, many on social media have condemned the challenge calling it dumb. Duh!
