The first red carpet event of the year is here. The 76th Golden Globe Awards will kickstart the awards season on Sunday. The Golden Globes, which honour the best in television and cinema last year, will be held at the iconic Beverly Hilton in California.

Here's all you need to know about the 2019 Golden Globes, hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg.

Top nominations

The best motion picture (drama) nominations for the Globes this year are noteworthy for the dominance of African American films—three out of five. Ryan Coogler's Marvel superhero movie Black Panther, Spike Lee's BlackkKlansman and Barry Jenkins's If Beale Street Could Talk. They are up against Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga-starrer A Star is Born. Black Panther also gains significance as the first superhero movie to be nominated for best picture at the Globes. The critically acclaimed A Star is Born, with a total of five nominations, is seen as a favourite and frontrunner for the Oscars, too.

Vice, starring Christian Bale, leads the nominations with six—best musical or comedy, director, actor, supporting actress, supporting actor and screenplay.

When it comes to streaming services, Netflix leads the pack with 13 nominations across television and cinema. Netflix's Oscar hopeful Roma earned three nominations including one for best foreign language film. Amazon Prime Video grabbed nominations for popular shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, A Very English Scandal and Homecoming.

The best motion picture (animated) will see Disney, Pixar and Sony Pictures battling it out with nominations Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Mirai, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
