Indian singers are not given enough opportunities, says musician Sonu Nigam. He said there was a stark difference in how Pakistani and Indian singers were treated, and that singers nowadays have to pay to music companies to do the shows. He made the statement at a summit, reported Times of India. However, the same treatment was not meted out to Pakistani artists, he claimed. According to the report, Sonu mentioned that his close friend and singer Atif Aslam was never asked to pay to sing at shows, neither was popular singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Recently, he was featured in an online video, as part of a social experiment by Culture Machine's digital channel, Being Indian, disguised as an old 'roadside ustaad'. The aim of the social experiment was to capture the joyful effect of music on people's daily life. The video shows the reaction of Mumbaikars as they stop by to listen the melodious voice of the old man, without not realising it's Sonu.

The video was shot in the busy lanes of Juhu where the pedestrians take notice of an old man singing in melodious voice with many pausing to enjoy a few moments but forced to continue to hurry and move on with their lives.
