Sorry Salman Bhai, your lyrics for 'Selfish' are as cringeworthy as it could get

Salman Khan's Race 3 is one of the most anticipated blockbusters this year. While Bhai fans eagerly wait for the action thriller directed by Remo D'Souza, they were in for a surprise treat from Salman Khan on Thursday.

The actor released the audio of the song 'Selfish' from Race 3. The song is sung by Atif Aslam and Iulia Vantur, a Romanian anchor rumoured to be Salman's love interest. What makes the song interesting is that Salman Khan turns lyricist with this song. While expectations about the song were sky high, it seems to have turned out quite in the opposite direction. “Ek baar baby selfish hoke apne liye jio na,” so goes Salman's lyrics for the song.

Meant to be a romantic song, the lyrics don't stand up to it. So much so, that even the soulful rendering by all-time-favourite Atif Aslam cannot save the song. Atif Aslam is loved for his back to back hit numbers—Pehli Nazar Mein and Be Intehaan—both from the Race series.  The music for the song has been composed by Vishal Mishra. Atif  and Iulia's voices do not complement each other, and the song goes for a toss. In fact, after the first stanza, one loses track of the song—quite unusual for an Atif Aslam number.

Speaking to media about his tryst as a lyricist, Salman Khan said:  "While discussing the creative for the song, I penned down a few thoughts on paper in sync with the plot of the film, which is about the selfishness within the family.

"When the music director Vishal Mishra heard it, he got extremely excited and said he will come back with a tune for the same. I said, 'But this is a part of a conversation and not lyrics'.

"However, he insisted to use the thoughts as it is for the song. Everyone loved the thoughts and wanted it to be used for the song."

Twitterati, too haven't taken kindly to the song. From calling it cringe-worthy, to terming it the worst song of the decade, some even slam the Race 3 team for ruining the good music the franchise had created over the years. Some even trolled Iulia Vantur for her voice. There are, however, fans who support  who are in awe of the 'romantic' lyrics.

That really is no relief for Salman Khan who has impressed fans by crooning numbers like Main Hoon Hero Tera, Hangover, Jumme Ki Raat in recent times. Maybe, Bhai should stay away from the written word.
