INS Dunagiri: Indian Navy to induct another Project 17A stealth guided-missile frigate
"Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray will be commissioned soon into the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in the nation's maritime journey," an official statement said
The Indian Navy is set to commission the indigenous stealth frigate INS Dunagiri this month, marking a significant advancement in India's warship design and construction capabilities. As the fifth ship of the Project 17A Nilgiri-class frigates and the second built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), Dunagiri is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor suites, engineered for sustained operations and enhanced stealth, representing a generational leap in indigenous shipbuilding. Its commissioning will coincide with the induction of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft 'Agray' and Survey Vessel (Large) 'Sanshodhak', underscoring India's self-reliance in defense, with the new Dunagiri carrying forward the legacy of its predecessor and strengthening the Navy's combat power and ability to safeguard national maritime interests.

INS Dunagiri, the indigenous stealth frigate with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor suites and engineered for sustained operations, is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy this month, a report said. It is the fifth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates and the second built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE).
Dunagiri will be commissioned alongside the indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft 'Agray' and Survey Vessel (Large) ship 'Sanshodhak'. Ahead of the commissioning, the Navy posted a video on YouTube on Tuesday with the tagline 'Dunagiri: Ready For Commission'.
The Navy on Wednesday posted on X a video about 'Dunagiri', the fifth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates, underlining India's warship design and construction capabilities. P17A ships are fitted with an advanced weapon and sensor suite as compared to the P17 (Shivalik-class). 'Dunagiri', the second of these frigates built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), was delivered to the Navy on March 30 at GRSE, Kolkata.
"Witness the engineering marvel behind Dunagiri, the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, designed by the Indian Navy and built by @OfficialGRSE. Every weld, every block and every milestone showcases the pinnacle of indigenous engineering and shipbuilding excellence," the Navy said in the post.
"Precision. Power. Agility. Power-packed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor suites, engineered for long sea legs, sustained operations and equipped with indigenous stealth technology, Dunagiri is built for multi-dimensional dominance and lethality. Dunagiri: Decisive Dauntless Dominant," a social media post by the guardians of the Indian waters read.
The video also features a recorded message from Captain Diwya Alok, Commanding Officer (designate) of the ship, who says, "As we join the Eastern Fleet and the Eastern Naval Command, we do so with a promise, a promise of resolve, reach and readiness."
Symbol of Indian Navy's self-reliance
In a post on X on June 11, the Navy unveiled the crest of 'Dunagiri', a name that carries forward the legacy of the former INS Dunagiri (F-36), which served the nation with distinction from May 1977 until October 2010 and earned a proud place in the annals of the Indian Navy.
Featuring the Osprey taking flight from a mountain peak, the crest symbolises the "valiant spirit of a combatant to soar, swoop and strike in all three dimensions".
With its motto 'Victory is my Profession', Dunagiri will strengthen the Navy's combat capability and serve as a "potent force multiplier" in safeguarding India's maritime interests, the force said in the post.
The new 'Dunagiri' carries forward a legacy of dedication, courage and operational excellence. Blending the spirit of her predecessor with cutting-edge indigenous technology, "she represents a new era of maritime power for India".
Project 17A Frigates
INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the P17A frigates, was commissioned on January 15, 2025. INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri were commissioned into the Navy on August 26, 2025.
It was the first time that two frontline surface combatants indigenously constructed by two different shipyards—Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL), Mumbai (INS Udaygiri), and GRSE, Kolkata (INS Himgiri)—were commissioned simultaneously.
INS Taragiri, the fourth potent platform of the Project 17A class endowed with a cutting-edge weapon suite, including supersonic missiles, was commissioned into the Navy in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on April 3. Mahendragiri, the fourth Project 17A stealth frigate, was delivered to the Navy on April 30 at the MDSL in Mumbai.

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), P17A frigates reflect a "generational leap" in indigenous ship design, stealth, survivability and combat capability.
"These ships are configured with Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plants, comprising a diesel engine and a gas turbine that drive a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) on each shaft, and a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). The potent weapon and sensor suite comprises anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare systems," an official statement during the commissioning of Mahendragiri said.
