Could India build guns for the US Army? Kalyani Strategic Systems tie-up opens door
Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL) and AM General have formed a strategic partnership to offer KSSL's mounted artillery gun systems for global markets
Indian defense company Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL) has partnered with American military vehicle manufacturer AM General to offer mounted artillery gun systems globally, including a proposed bid for the US Army's Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program. Announced at the Eurosatory defense exhibition, the collaboration aims to develop a 155mm Mobile Tactical Cannon system derived from KSSL's MArG platform, with potential deliveries starting in 2027 if the proposal is selected by the US government. The proposed system integrates KSSL's patented Soft Recoil Technology—which significantly reduces recoil force to enable lighter, more durable vehicle configurations—with AM General's military platforms. Featuring a 52-caliber 155mm cannon capable of firing projectiles over 40 kilometers, this highly mobile, all-weather artillery solution is designed to provide a scalable and survivable firepower option for the US military and its global allies.

An Indian artillery system could possibly find its way into a major US Army programme following a new partnership signed between Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL), the defence arm of Bharat Forge, and American military vehicle manufacturer AM General.
The two companies have signed a strategic partnership to offer mounted artillery gun systems for the global market. The agreement was announced during the ongoing Eurosatory defence exhibition in Paris.
KSSL revealed that AM General has proposed participating in the US Army's Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) programme using a solution based on KSSL's mounted artillery gun platform.
According to the company, the proposal submitted to the US government involves the development and delivery of a 155mm Mobile Tactical Cannon system derived from KSSL's existing artillery platform. If selected, deliveries are planned for 2027.
The partnership is aimed at meeting the requirements of modern armed forces by providing compact, mobile and all-weather artillery systems capable of operating across varied terrain.
KSSL said the collaboration is also intended to support broader allied distribution, positioning the platform as a scalable and exportable 155mm artillery solution for partner nations seeking modern and survivable firepower.
The proposed system would combine KSSL's patented Soft Recoil Technology with AM General's military vehicle platforms.
"By integrating the patented soft recoil technology to their state-of-the-art and mature platforms, we will be delivering truly groundbreaking capabilities that can provide an advantage on the evolving battlefield," said John Chadbourne, president and CEO of AM General.
At the centre of the collaboration is KSSL's MArG system. The platform features a 52-calibre 155mm cannon integrated with Soft Recoil Technology, an automated load-assist mechanism and an advanced all-weather fire-control suite.
According to the company, the system can fire standard high-explosive projectiles beyond 40 kilometres and carries more than 20 projectiles and propellant charges on board.
KSSL said MArG’s Soft Recoil Technology absorbs significantly more recoil force than conventional artillery systems, enabling a lighter vehicle, a lighter turret and reduced wear on the overall weapon system throughout its operational life.
