A few days ago, Captain Bharat Bhardwaj marked what was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of his life after completing his Army Aviation convocation at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) in Nashik. The young Army officer proposed to his girlfriend, Arushi, in front of a helicopter following the passing-out parade.

Videos and photos of the happy proposal quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and mixed reactions.

"It's a very big day for all of us, for my family, for my mother, for my fiancé, for my second parents, and it's a big day for us. Thank you so much for being part of it, and we have tried to make this parade, this air show and everything a very big moment for all of us. Thank you so much," Captain Bhardwaj had then said.

While many social media users hailed the gesture as a heartfelt expression of love, others questioned whether the proposal was appropriate in a military setting.

The controversy centred on allegations that the officer may have breached military decorum and protocol by proposing while in uniform and in the vicinity of military equipment during a ceremony linked to his graduation as an Army Aviation pilot.

According to a report by The Print, the Indian Army has taken cognisance of the viral video. Citing sources, the publication reported that senior officers have sought an explanation from Captain Bhardwaj regarding the incident.

The report said the Army views the use of military ceremonies and equipment for personal social media content seriously. However, no formal disciplinary action is likely as the officer is young and is not believed to have committed any serious offence.

According to Army sources quoted by The Print, senior officers have been asked to sensitise him about the rules, regulations and conduct expected of an officer. The sources reportedly said the Army was unhappy with the timing and location of the proposal, stressing the need to preserve the dignity, discipline and ethos associated with military ceremonies and the uniform.

The incident has also triggered a wider debate about the standards of conduct expected from serving military personnel and whether personal moments should have a place during official military events.

Not everyone agrees that the proposal amounted to a breach of discipline.

Former Northern Army Commander Lt Gen (Retd.) K.J.S. Dhillon came out in support of the young officer.

"After the passing-out parade, a young officer, a helicopter pilot, proposed to his girlfriend or fiancée. The photo went viral with all sorts of reactions coming in. Some called it a breach of discipline, others called it a security issue, while some felt soldiers shouldn’t do such things," he said.

Offering a different perspective, Lt Gen Dhillon argued that expressions of personal affection should not be viewed as incompatible with military discipline.

"But in my view, if we expect a soldier’s patriotism to be so strong that he’s ready to sacrifice his life, then why question his personal love? If he expresses love on social media or otherwise, it doesn’t diminish discipline; it just shows a young spirit," he said, according to news agency ANI.

"I don't think there's any breach here. It was a heartfelt moment, not worth overreacting. We should accept it gracefully," the retired Army officer added.

He also pointed out that military equipment has been on display during many ‘Know your Army’ exhibitions around the country. "The students and non military personnel have clicked pics with it showing pride and love for the Army. So, please don’t bring in the national security angle into this," he noted.

He said in a tweet: "You want the young officer to sacrifice his life for the love of the Nation, but you don’t want him to express his love for his fiancée.

"If you can not find a fault in his professional capabilities, don’t do this nuktachini for such a pure gesture of love and belonging."

He added, "Let the young soldier do his national duty with pride and honour."
