In what has been billed as a significant military operational milestone, the Indian Air Force (IAF), for the first time, landed a frontline fighter jet at the newly opened Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

The landing of IAF's Su-30MKI at the airport, located in Ulwe in Raigad district, on Thursday showcased the force's reach across the nation's civil aviation infrastructure.

The move also demonstrated the operational flexibility of the frontline fighter to operate from non-traditional locations, if necessary. 

"Indian Air Force created history today as IAF Su-30MKI landed at Navi Mumbai International Airport for the very first time," the South Western Air Command C PRO said in a tweet.

"A majestic roar filled the skies as the fighter jet touched down, showcasing the IAF's incredible operational flexibility and our nation's growing aerospace capabilities," the tweet further said.

The landing is also being hailed as a major milestone in the airport’s operational testing and integration of India's military aircraft with civilian aviation infrastructure. It also showcased the capabilities of the air traffic management systems, emergency response capabilities and ground handling infrastructure of the newly opened airport.

Many on the internet called the move a "reminder of the professionalism, capability, and technological strength of the Indian Air Force."

In October 2024, the C-295 medium tactical transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force made the inaugural landing at the airport. The Su-30MKI was also present there then, but only for a low flypast over the runway.
