Akash Ambani on Jio’s international expansion: Reliance Jio could be preparing for its next phase of growth beyond India, with Chairman Akash Ambani hinting at the company’s ambitions to take its homegrown telecommunications technology to international markets.
On the 5G connectivity, Ambani said, "We hope it's all across India, especially in Odisha. From my point of view, let me speak about our home broadband. Today our 5G network covers 99 per cent of India's living population. So anyone who needs a 5G sim on a 5G device is able to access a 5G network in India. This is even higher than what America or any of the developed nations have done. So really on the home side, we want to see a huge volume of users."
Talking about the 5G network across the country, Ambani says the 5G network is only utlised around 33 per cent and there is a huge efficiency in this matter. "I don't know if you've got the opportunity to go through this in the experience zone, but the infrastructure rollout of our network equipment of the UBR is already done. Now we can service India where anyone who needs a home broadband technology, within 48 hours of them requesting that. And that's simply because the last mile has gone wireless," he said.
Regarding the digital connectivity across smaller towns, Jio says it hopes the next phase of growth is across India. "Today our 5G network covers 99 per cent living population. So anyone who needs a 5G sim on a 5G device is able to access a 5G network in India. This is even higher than what America or any of the developed nations have done. So really on the home side, we want to see a huge volume of users," Ambani mentioned.
Touching upon the commercial model, Akash Ambani said this technology is not just for the developing market but also for the developed markets. The real deal is the unlicensed band, as per him, which is now available across the world and they're product line that has scaled our operations to that. "We see the entire world as an addressable market that we can go and do. Of course, where the fibre rollouts have been and the price competitive of our fibre rollouts, that is somewhere that we will carefully examine to see what value proposition that we give to our partners. But for an example, like the American operators have 3% of their customer base takes up 60% of their 5G capacity on 5G FW. And that's something that we can look to change because we play on the unlicensed band. The business model I just touched upon, this is not selling hardware or equipment as a fee," he mentioned.
The statement comes after SpaceX owner Elon Musk posted sarcastic remarks on X targeting Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani, mockingly calling him 'Prime Minister Ambani' and accusing him of stalling Starlink's market entry in India.
