In a significant revision to widen the social security net of employees, the Centre has revised the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) wage ceiling.
The move, which will come into effect from September 17, aims to expand social security coverage and bring more workers into the formal retirement savings system.
What is the latest EPFO revision?
Under the latest revision, the government has increased the limit for mandatory EPF coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month.
The EPFO wage ceiling determines the monthly wage limit for the mandatory coverage under the Employees' Provident Funds framework. The change is intended to extend EPF-linked social security protection to employees who were previously outside mandatory coverage because their wages did not fall under the previous limit.
The decision is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees within the ambit of mandatory EPFO coverage, significantly widening social security protection for workers, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press briefing. The move is also significant as the wage ceiling revision is taking place after 12 years. The annual government outgo is estimated at around Rs 11,339 crore against the existing annual budgetary support of about Rs 10,250 crore.
The present decision carries forward this approach by further raising the ceiling to Rs 25,000 to reflect sustained wage growth, rising incomes and continued expansion of formal employment over the intervening years, an official release said.
Who benefits from the EPFO wage ceiling hike?
The revision primarily benefits employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month who were not previously covered under mandatory EPF provisions.
The expansion could provide eligible workers with access to three key forms of social security:
- Enhanced retirement security
- Coverage under EPFO social security net
- Insurance protection under Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme
