The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is introducing extensive digital reforms in 2026 to streamline PF account management for salaried employees. These updates include expanded auto-settlement for final withdrawals up to ₹5 Lakhs, aiming for faster claim processing within three days. UAN activation will be exclusively managed through the Umang App, requiring Aadhaar-based Face Authentication for enhanced security. Furthermore, the PF transfer process is being automated for eligible members, eliminating the need for employer approvals and manual submissions. The EPFO is also prioritizing faster claim settlements, with provisions for penalties on delays, and introducing features like Passbook Lite for easier access to contribution summaries and DigiLocker for essential PF documents. Additionally, UPI-based PF withdrawals through the BHIM app are anticipated shortly.

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has updated its methods and introduced several digital reforms in 2026 that can affect how salaried employees access their PF money, manage their accounts and transfer accounts while changing jobs. Here are five new digital updates for EPFO that salaried employees must note.

From Auto Settlement extending to UPI-based PF withdrawal, some of these reforms are yet to be implemented.

Auto Settlement may extend to final withdrawals

EPFO's current auto-settlement payment, which allows PF funds to be disbursed without human intervention, only applies to advance claims. However, the Central Provident Fund Commissioner, Ramesh Krishnmurthi, mentioned plans to extend the provision for final withdrawals after employment.

The Auto-Settlement limit was also increased to ₹5 lakh from ₹1 lakh in 2025, ensuring members have faster access and allowing larger sums to be withdrawn. Eligible claims will be processed within around three days. The facility will cover the advances for needs such as illness, education, marriage and housing.

UAN to be activated on Umang app

To generate or activate a Universal Account Number (UAN), EPFO members will need to access the Umang App. The unified member portal will no longer handle this service.

The Umang app requires Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT), which can be done using the separate AadhaarFaceRd app.

PF transfer process to be automatic

Previously, the transfer of PF accounts required approvals from the previous employer, the new employer and the EPFO office. However, employees no longer need these approvals nor have to manually submit Form 13 to transfer PF funds.

The process will apply to Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number holders with approved KYC.

Regarding EPF and EPS claim settlement

The retirement fund body expects most PF withdrawal claims to be provided on the same day or within two days.

If EPFO does not settle a claim within 20 days without a valid reason, the delayed amount with 12 per cent annual interest can be recovered from the responsible commissioner.

Passbook Lite

Passbook Lite is a feature of the primary member portal, launched by EPFO in 2025, that lets members view the summary of their PF contributions, withdrawals and balance directly.

In addition, EPFO members can access important PF documents through DigiLocker. These include UAN card, Pension Payment Order (PPO) and Scheme Certificate.

PF withdrawals are also to be facilitated through the BHIM app, which will allow the funds to be credited directly to the members’ UPI-linked bank account. The framework is expected to be implemented in a month.
