India's monsoon is usually gauged by rainfall, reservoir levels, and agricultural output. Yet one of its least-noticed impacts is on the nation's roads.

Every year, heavy rains significantly increase the likelihood of crashes, contributing to a higher incidence of road crashes and fatalities. The scale of the problem is stark.

As per MoRTH data, India recorded 4,87,707 road accidents and 1,77,175 fatalities last year, an average of 1,336 accidents and 485 deaths every single day, or roughly one life lost every three minutes.

Government estimates and international studies place the annual cost of road accidents in India at an estimated 3 per cent to 5 per cent of its GDP. The risks are much higher in the monsoon season. Poor visibility, flooded roads, faded markings, inadequate drainage and slippery surfaces all combine to create conditions where even experienced drivers find it difficult to drive safely.

The economic fallout is rippling through many industries. Every accident has the potential to disrupt the movement of goods. Late deliveries impact supply chains, raise transportation costs and lower operational efficiency. Fleet operators pay out for vehicle repairs, insurance claims and downtime. Manufacturers and retailers pay indirectly through inventory disruptions and missed delivery schedules.

The impact also reaches public infrastructure. Road closures due to accidents only add to congestion, which results in more fuel consumption and longer travel times. Public resources are also stretched thin by emergency response, medical care, traffic management and road repairs. These are costs borne collectively by governments, businesses and citizens alike.

Perhaps the greatest economic impact comes from the loss of human productivity. Many serious road crashes involve individuals in their economically productive years. Beyond immediate healthcare costs, families often face reduced household income, long-term rehabilitation expenses, and permanent loss of earning capacity. Collectively, these factors reduce workforce participation and place additional pressure on the economy.

While discussions around monsoon preparedness typically focus on potholes and drainage, the role of road safety infrastructure deserves equal attention. Road markings are among the primary visual cues that guide drivers, particularly during heavy rain or at night.
