Video-making platform TikTok, which was banned by the Centre in 2020 over security concerns following a prolonged border standoff with China, has reportedly become accessible to several website users in India. However, the app is not available to download on App Store or Play Store.

The central government has not made any official announcement regarding lifting the ban on TikTok or other Chinese apps. TikTok parent firm ByteDance has also not made any announcements regarding relaunch of the app in India. However, reports suggested that TikTok might have started testing its platform and looking at a phased rollout as it awaits a potential nod from the IT ministry.

TikTok was among 59 appss that were blocked by the government back in June 2020, with the authorities saying that these platforms were involved in activities that are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order."

These included apps such as UC Browser, UC News, ShareIt, Kwai, Baidu Map, Clash of Kings, DU battery saver and Vigo Video.

The development comes days after Chinese Foreign Minister met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi. China on Thursday lifted restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals, fertilisers, and tunnel boring machines to India.

The MEA on Friday revealed that PM Modi will visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.
