Tech and social media major Meta reportedly started its latest round of layoffs on Monday, initiating performance-based terminations across its global operations. The objective of the California-based firm is to reportedly decrease its workforce by about 5%. Based on the company's current workforce, the terminations are likely to affect around 3,600 men and women.

Meta has called the people about to exit their offices as "lowest performers" and vowed to backfill at least some of the positions. Mark Zuckerberg's team will carry on with Monday's terminations while keeping its offices open, reports said.

It was confirmed that the "fired" workers would receive an email regarding the same on their work and personal addresses and lose access to company systems within an hour of being informed.

Meta's United States workforce was listed among the first set of people to face the heat once the internal memos regarding the layoffs are rolled out. They are signed by Meta's Head of People Janelle Gale, news agency Reuters had earlier reported. According to the news agency, Meta staff in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands will not receive such memos immediately due to local regulations but workers across other parts of Europe, Asia and Africa got no such protection and would be served in a few weeks.

While thousands are let go by the company, Meta is simultaneously hiring engineers, Forbes said in a report. VP of Engineering for Monetization Peng Fan is given the responsibility to bring on board engineers during interviews scheduled to take place between Feb. 11 and March 13, the report said.
