The latest data released by the Maharashtra Home Department revealed that a whopping Rs 38,872.14 crore was involved in total across 2,19,047 cases of financial fraud reported last year. Mumbai topped the list with the number of incidents.
Often heralded as the "financial capital" of the country, Mumbai saw the highest number of financial fraud cases last year in the state, with 51,873 cases resulting in total losses of Rs 12,404.12 crore.
Pune district saw 42,802 cases, out of which 22,059 fraud cases (Rs 5,122.66 crore) were from Pune city alone.
Thane city saw 20,892 cases and Navi Mumbai reported 13,260 cases, while Nagpur city recorded 11,875 cases.
Last Friday, Thane police announced that they apprehended six people, including two juveniles, for online fraud and cheating.
According to the authorities, one among them allegedly cheated people online. The proceeds were later transferred to various bank accounts operated by the other accused.
Last week, on Tuesday, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Mumbai police arrested Ukrainian actor Armen Ataine in connection with the Torres investment fraud case, authorities said.
This took the total number of arrests in the case to six. One day before, Torres CEO Tausif Riyaz from Lonavala in Pune.
More than a hundred investors were allegedly defrauded of crores of rupees in various schemes of Torres stores, according to reports.
