Amid the increased focus on Lakshadweep as a tourism destination in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the islands and subsequent social media posts, SpiceJet chairman and managing director Ajay Singh said the airliner has exclusive rights to fly to the archipelago under the regional connectivity scheme (RCS).

Addressing the annual general meeting (AGM) of the company on Wednesday, Singh said SpiceJet is planning to start flights to Lakshadweep soon.

SpiceJet is also gearing up to launch new flight routes to Ayodhya from different cities in the country.

Only Agatti Island of Lakshadweep has an airfield. There have been media reports that claimed that India is planning to open a new airport in Lakshadweep.

Singh also announced that the airliner is set to infuse ₹2,250 crore to boost growth and network expansion.

According to media reports, Carlyle Aviation Partners, which holds a seven per cent stake in SpiceJet wants to invest more in the airliner.
