A few days after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy expressed displeasure over the unwillingness of some of the employees who are working remotely to return to the office, an employee who was hired in a remote role is now left with the tough choice of uprooting their whole life or hunting for a new job.

According to a Business Insider report, the employee, a software development engineer, had left the company earlier but joined back in a remote role. The employee, who chose to stay anonymous, is now faced with the tough choice of either relocating to Seattle to be in the office three days a week as mandated, moving to a different team, or looking for a job elsewhere.

“I'm being told I need to move to Seattle or switch teams, or I'm out of a job. I moved to this area 13 years ago. I own a house here. My partner has a career here. I've built a home here," the individual told Business Insider.

The employee had reportedly left Amazon looking for remote jobs but returned as he was assigned such a role. According to the employee, the decision to bring in a change in remote work is a "massive breach of trust".

Asserting that the trust factor is lost, the employee said, "I'm just done with it. I'm at the point now where if Amazon said, we'll take everything back, and you can have your job, I wouldn't accept it. I don't trust anyone there enough at this point."

The company had been very emphatic about employees returning to the office.

“And if you can’t disagree and commit, I also understand that, but it’s probably not going to work out for you at Amazon because we are going back to the office at least three days a week, and it’s not right for all of our teammates to be in three days a week and for people to refuse to do so,” Amazon CEO Jassy had said.
