Hundreds of employees in India will be affected by the mass layoff that tech giant Amazon is gearing up for. A recent report had said Amazon is to follow the trend of massive job cuts that have been plaguing the technology industry around the world and will let go of 10,000 employees.

According to Economic Times, a few hundred employees of Amazon in India across different divisions will lose jobs. While the exact number of people who would be losing jobs is not known, the news report, quoting sources, said it would be "deeper" than a few hundred employees.

“There is a sense it might be relatively higher as compared to peers like Meta-owned Facebook and others where India was not affected in a big way," ET quoted a source as saying.

The 10,000 people who could be laid off represent roughly three per cent of Amazon's corporate employees and less than one per cent of its global workforce of more than 1.5 million composed primarily of hourly workers.

The reports of mass layoff came a day after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos revealed that he is planning to give away most of his wealth for charity during his lifetime.

Amazon's retail business covering its physical and online retail business and its logistics operations has been under strain after the surge of demand and breakneck expansion during the pandemic, a New York Times report had said.
