RealMe, a subsidiary of BBK Electronics (which also owns Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus), announced its new 64 MP quad-camera today on August 8.

When it comes to camera sensors, bigger usually meant better. But, over the years, smartphone camera technology has improved significantly, allowing smaller sensors to pack a better punch through the use of

The new 64 MP sensor will pack 9248 x 6936 pixels at its highest setting, though by default the sensor will output 16MP images that combine four pixels into one.

RealMe’s new 64MP camera will feature on an as-yet-unannounced phone, part of a launch that includes the RealMe 5 and RealMe 5 Pro. The company announced the sensor at an event in India today, a day after Xiaomi premiered the same at an event in Beijing. The Samsung GW1 64MP sensor will be put to use on a quad-camera setup for the first time in India, when RealMe launches its next phone featuring the technology.

According to the company, the “full-function quad-camera system” will have features like Ultra Resolution, Super Wide Angle, Ultra Macro, Ultra Nightscape, a Telephoto lens, Chroma Boost and standard features like portrait, panorama and expert modes.

Samsung describes its ISO Cell pixel sensor as a “small yet high-performing pixel for high resolution in slimmer devices”.

RealMe CEO Madhav Seth had tweeted about the sensor in June, promising that this would make its way to India before any other country. He added that the next generation of RealMe series, pro series, and X-series would feature quad-cameras.

The first RealMe phone to feature this sensor is expected to be launched before Diwali of 2019. Redmi is also expected to launch a phone with this sensor by the fourth quarter of 2019.

While RealMe will likely feature the first launch of a 64MP smartphone, Xiaomi had announced plans for a 108MP smartphone this year too, with a resolution of 12032 by 9024.
