The new Ertiga-based crossover was spotted with a NEXA trim

Maruti Suzuki’s planned crossover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) based on the Ertiga platform was spied on Tuesday by GaadiWaadi. According to the spied images, the crossover will feature a NEXA trim, with a hexagonal grill in the front and interior seat lining similar to what is already on offer in NEXA vehicles.

The Ertiga ‘XL6’ is expected to release on August 21, 2019 and will feature many parts shared with the Ertiga Medium Utility Vehicle (MUV) platform. The new car is expected to come with a 1.5L petrol engine upgraded to BS-VI emission standards. There will be no diesel variant, in keeping with Maruti's plans to discontinue sales of diesel vehicles from April of 2020.

The BS-IV K15 1.5L engine generates 77 KW (103BHP) at 6,000 RPM and 138 Nm at 4400 RPM, with a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.34km/l. The engine features ‘smart hybrid’ technology, which pairs the brakes to a Lithium-Ion battery that can be recharged via regenerative braking technology.

On the styling front, the XL6 is a chunkier design with a larger front grill (an inverted version of that on the Ertiga), with a raised ride profile, body cladding and anti-skid plates that will make it more capable on rough, bumpy and off-road-like conditions. The second row features swivelling ‘captain’ seats that will allow easy access to the third row, at the cost of an extra seat (making this a 6-seater instead of a 7-seater).

The dash will feature the same Smartplay system that is found in the Ertiga, Swift, and Dzire.

As a sportier three-row MPV, the XL6 will compete with the likes of the Mahindra Marazzo, the Hyundai Creta and Honda BRV. In addition, a 7-seater Tata Harrier is in the works, as is a 7-seater MG Hector.

The XL6 will be sold through NEXA showrooms. As a premium crossover variant of the Ertiga, the XL6 will likely be priced above the Ertiga, which starts at Rs 8 lakh ex-showroom.

From April of 2020, BS-IV standard vehicles may no longer be sold. The 1.5L engine in the XL6 will be the first BS-IV 1.5L on offer by Maruti Suzuki, and is likely to also find service in the Ciaz and Ertiga.
