Adani Defence and Aerospace to venture into manufacturing aerospace gears

Adani Defence and Aerospace will soon tie up with Punj Llyod and US-based Rave Gears to manufacture high precision aerospace gears. Adani Defence and Aerospace, a part of the diversified conglomerate of the Adani group, announced its intention to collaborate for the design, manufacture and assembly of high precision gears and transmission systems for rotary platforms at the DefExpo 2018 in Chennai on Wednesday.

Announcing the tie-up, Adani Defence and Aerospace head Ashish Rajvanshi said, “The tripartite agreement would leverage on the strengths of the three companies.” He further said the collaboration intends to manufacture gears and gear assemblies for rotary platforms which is now produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for all the aircrafts and helicopters manufactured or assembled in India. The collaboration of the three companies will also look for future programmes like naval utility helicopters and naval multi-role helicopters. “We will use the base in India for export to Global OEMs, both in military and civil aerospace domain,” Ashish added.

Refusing to deliberate on the partnership, Ashish said,the facility will be set up at Malanpur near Gwalior. “The roadmap is still to be worked,” he added.

Elaborating more on the collaboration, Ashok Wadhawan, president, manufacturing business, Punj Llyod said the commercial operations will begin in a year, while the other preliminary activities for setting up the facility are under way. “This is a unique collaboration. The first of its kind of a tripartite agreement which will start developing the gears in which only HAL was a clear leader,” said Ashok.

“We have been at the forefront of building industrial capabilities in defence manufacturing in the country across various domains from small arms to artillery guns. This collaboration will help India achieve indigenisation in one of the most critical components of rotary platforms,” he added.

Nick Patel, CEO, Rave Gears, said “It is an opportunity for Rave to do what it is best at. We will offer the technology,” said.

The three companies would soon evaluate options of floating a new firm under the agreement. The collaboration will evaluate setting up a manufacturing base in India, and also look for exporting aerospace gears to global original equipment manufacturers.
