GLRA INDIA - A legacy of compassion and transformation in the fight against leprosy

In the context of humanitarian service and commitment, the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association India (GLRA India) stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication, bringing hope, transforming lives, and restoring confidence to those affected by Leprosy. From a humble beginning, our goals always focused on humanity, and we strive to provide holistic care to people and support in sustaining their livelihoods. Over the past 56 years, GLRA India’s achievements have been monumental, encompassing 383 projects initiated across 23 states and 5 Union Territories in India. We served a population of over 350 million, providing comprehensive care for leprosy, tuberculosis, and disabilities. Through our initiatives, we diagnosed and treated 2.46 million leprosy-affected individuals, offering in-patient care to 767,321 and performing 42,455 reconstructive surgeries, diagnosis and treatment adherence support to over 0.7 lakh TB-affected people, and fostering socio-economic rehabilitation for 316,009 people with disabilities. Our commitment goes beyond restoring not just health but the dignity of those affected. One inspiring story is that of Ranjani, a symbol of resilience who, with GLRA India's support, emerged from the shadows of leprosy to reclaim a life of purpose and dignity.

“ GLRA India is at the forefront of leprosy eradication with a strong and dedicated team. While there has been a decline in new cases globally, the burden remains significant, India alone contributes over 50% of global leprosy every year. Leprosy, for ages, has always been associated with stigma and discrimination, and this is a significant barrier to combating the disease, hindering people from seeking help, delaying diagnosis, and complicating disease control. By supporting the National Leprosy Eradication Program, we aim to bring lasting changes and empower those affected by leprosy. Leading the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP India) and working in 12 states, GLRA India strives to bring a life of dignity to those affected by leprosy in the country.” says Shibu George, Interim Chief Executive Officer

"Anila's Inspiring Journey: Conquering Leprosy Through Early Intervention and Rehabilitation"

Anila

Anila, a 4th-grade student and the daughter of a farmer from Telangana had a fall while playing with her friends, resulting in an injury to her left hand. She was treated with basic medication in the nearest PHC, but still, there were no signs of improvement even after two months. She further developed claw fingers, and the wound remained unhealed.

She was taken for specialized medical care in Hyderabad and was identified having skin patches on her hands and legs that had gone unnoticed before. She was then referred to Sivananda Rehabilitation Home, a partner NGO of GLRA India for further evaluation. After a detailed examination, the test results confirmed that she was suffering with leprosy. She was admitted at Sivananda and was started with twelve months of leprosy treatment (MB-MDT) and physiotherapy, supported by splints for her hand.

Anila's health condition gradually improved over a period, and significant progress was noticed. It took a long time for Anila and her family to adapt and overcome the situation, thanks to the early medical and rehabilitative interventions that helped her regain the strength in her hand. Recently, Anila completed the treatment and is now confident to return to school. Her story is certainly an inspiration for many children who are affected by Leprosy.

Looking forward, GLRA India envisions a world free of leprosy, where those affected are embraced by society without prejudice. We call upon all the readers to join this noble mission as volunteers, well-wishers, fundraisers, or donors and play a vital role in paving the way towards a leprosy-free India. On the occasion of World Leprosy Day, 30th January 2024, GLRA remains committed, inviting everyone to be architects of change in creating a healthier, more compassionate world. Let's work together to script a future where leprosy is a distant memory, replaced by stories of triumph, resilience, and lives restored. Your small act of transforming lives and restoring confidence makes a significant difference.
