Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 (PTI) Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday paid tributes to R Sankar, the first Congress CM of Keralam, on his 54th death anniversary.

In a post on X, Satheesan described Sankar as a guiding light who provided clear direction to the Congress party and inspired generations of leaders, including their own.

Sankar was CM for two years from 1962.

Satheesan said it was both a profound responsibility and a matter of pride for him to hold the Finance portfolio once held by Sankar.

"Keralam will forever cherish the memory of this great visionary," Satheesan said, recalling his contributions to the state and the Congress party.

In a Facebook post, Chennithala said he visited Sankar's residence and met his family members on the occasion.

Sankar, who served as chief minister from September 26, 1962, to September 10, 1964, provided clear direction to the state's progress through his administrative vision and uncompromising pro-people positions, he said.

Chennithala also recalled Sankar's contributions as a leader of the Sree Narayana movement, saying he had established several schools and higher educational institutions for the state.

Every moment spent with Sankar's family members brought back memories of the veteran leader's presence, he added.

Sankar's life, dedicated to the political evolution of Keralam and the empowerment of society, would always be remembered with respect. He also shared a video of his meeting with the family members of Sankar on his social media handle.

Meanwhile, a memorial meeting was held in honour of Sankar at the KPCC headquarters here, which was attended by senior leaders and party workers.
