Hazarika, popularly known as 'Sudhakantha' (the nightingale), passed away in Mumbai on November 5, 2011, at the age of 85.
Born on September 8, 1926, at Sadiya in Assam, he was a multifaceted personality whose contributions spanned music, literature, cinema and social life.
Hazarika shared a deep emotional and cultural bond with Arunachal Pradesh, with his association with the state spanning several decades.
He also produced, directed and composed music for Arunachal Pradesh's first Hindi feature film in colour, 'Mera Dharam Meri Maa', released in 1976, and made a documentary on the state's tribal folk songs and dances titled 'For Whom the Sun Shines' in 1974.
The Arunachal Pradesh government honoured him with a gold medal in 1977 for his contribution to tribal welfare and cultural promotion.
A 10-foot bronze statue, described as the 'Statue of Brotherhood', was unveiled at Bolung village in Lower Dibang Valley district in December 2018, recognising his enduring contribution to strengthening the cultural ties between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
With his distinctive baritone voice and deeply meaningful compositions, Hazarika emerged as one of India's most influential cultural personalities.
